What about Dave Holland – holding down the basic form and groove, so all the “outside” soloing has something solid to create “tension and release” against? Respect to the unsung hero. That’s class a chit. Metheny is simply my favorite artist. There are a ton of outstanding guitarists, but for me, he’s just the best. It always hits the spot. He’s the only artist that consistently pulls me out of the shit when I need it. Especially the Pat Metheny Group days. It oozes positivity. It’s beautiful, it’s therapeutic, it’s mesmerizing, it’s chill, and occasionally it’ll even kick you in the teeth. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen him three times, twice with PMG, once with damn good seats. I’m not a musician so I had to look this up. He played a 42 string Picasso guitar, a mind melting experience. The Head Hunters Herbie Hancock Shirt is a fucking Einstein, not hyperbole. It’s like Albert Einstein as a musician. I mean that Orchestrion Project? Who else could not only have thought of that but executed it as well? Extraordinary. I’m guessing that as a child Pat always did pretty well on his science projects. I think that cat is from a different planet.

I love that concert!!!! Some of my favorite versions ever of many Herbie compositions. Eye of the Hurricane being one of them. I bought the 2CD Box in 1993 as I was touring touring with Ricky Martin thru Argentina. I bought a bunch of CD of a “German label” called Jazz Door. They had only live performances of Michael Brecker, Mike Stern, Herbie Hancock, Brecker Brothers, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Miles and many more. I was blown away and bought everything they had because I had never heard of these live performances being on CD ever before. Lugo di Romagna, Italy. So magical that people stopped to breath at the end of every tune. For some seconds before thunderous applause. Probably the best jazz gig of my life, Herbie is awesome as is the band, but I never understood metheny’s playing…just the Head Hunters Herbie Hancock Shirt licks over and over using ornaments to mask it all, can’t beat the old school guys – they just tell a story with solid ideas and clean impro. I wonder if Holland forgot that he had a Fender standing up right behind him. It sounds great on upright, but the electric is more suited to these jazz rock kids of tunes.
